Backyard Hawks: Cooper's Hawks, Red-Tails, and Feeder Predation

A flurry of panicked wingbeats, a thump against the fence, and then a hawk standing on the lawn with a mourning dove or house sparrow underfoot is one of the more startling things a backyard bird feeder can produce. Reactions range from fascination to a strong urge to intervene, but the hawk isn't doing anything unusual or wrong — it's doing exactly what a concentration of prey birds around a feeder predicts a resident predator will eventually do.

Two Very Different Hunting Styles

Cooper's hawks are the accipiter most commonly involved in feeder predation: compact, long-tailed, built for speed and maneuverability through cluttered cover rather than open-sky soaring. They hunt by ambush, using fences, shrubs, and building corners as cover for a final burst of acceleration, and a feeder area with birds clustered in the open is close to ideal hunting ground for that style. Red-tailed hawks, by contrast, are buteos built for soaring and are much less likely to work a feeder directly; they're the large, broad-winged hawk seen circling overhead or perched on a utility pole scanning open ground, hunting rodents and rabbits more than songbirds.

A Cooper's hawk that has found a productive feeder will often return to the same yard repeatedly over days or weeks, sometimes perching nearby between attempts, which is why one successful strike at a feeder is rarely an isolated event.

A Cooper's Hawk Can Break Its Own Toes

Cooper's hawks hunting through dense brush and around structures at speed sustain a notably high rate of chest and wing-bone injuries over their lifetimes from collisions with obstacles during high-speed pursuits — a study of skeletal remains found a large share showed evidence of healed fractures. Hunting fast through clutter carries real physical risk even for the predator, not just the prey.

Is It Actually a Problem for the Songbird Population?

A single Cooper's hawk taking birds from a feeder occasionally is not meaningfully denting local songbird populations; predation is a normal population-limiting factor, and feeder birds as a group reproduce at rates that account for a baseline level of predation loss. What does matter more for songbird welfare, and gets far less attention than the dramatic hawk strike, is outdoor domestic cats, which take a substantially larger toll on backyard bird populations annually than wild avian predators do, precisely because cats hunt in numbers wild predators never approach and aren't limited by natural territory spacing.

What to Do (and Not Do) During a Strike

  • Let it happen — intervening in a natural predation event, however uncomfortable to watch, is not advisable or usually legal to attempt
  • Move feeders near dense cover if strikes become frequent — songbirds get a shorter, safer dash to shelter, reducing the hawk's ambush advantage
  • Add window strike prevention near feeders — a panicked bird fleeing a hawk is at much higher risk of a fatal glass collision than under normal conditions
  • Don't remove feeders permanently over one hawk sighting — a resident accipiter is a normal and, over time, self-limiting part of a healthy feeder ecosystem

Identifying Which Hawk Is Working Your Yard

Size is the fastest field clue between the two common backyard accipiters: a Cooper's hawk is crow-sized with a proportionally large head and a long, rounded tail, while its smaller lookalike, the sharp-shinned hawk, is closer to a blue jay in size with a smaller head and a more squared-off tail tip — genuinely difficult to separate at a glance even for experienced birders. Either way, a hawk regularly working a yard is worth treating the same way homeowners are learning to treat a resident owl or other raptor: as free, ongoing pest and population control rather than an intruder to be discouraged.

Nesting Nearby vs. Just Passing Through

A hawk seen once and never again was likely hunting a wider circuit that happens to include the yard as one stop among several. A hawk seen repeatedly across weeks, especially one that seems to know the property's layout and returns to the same perch after a strike, is more likely nesting within its territory somewhere close by, since accipiters generally don't travel far from an active nest during breeding season. Cooper's hawk nests are usually built high in a conifer or dense deciduous tree, often reused or rebuilt on the same general site year after year, and a pair with young to feed will hunt considerably more aggressively and more often than a lone bird simply passing through, which is usually the explanation when feeder predation suddenly seems to intensify over a period of a few weeks in late spring.
