Raised ridges snaking across a lawn overnight get blamed on grubs, voles, even opossums, but a straight or gently curving ridge that pops up a few inches high and stays that shape is almost always a mole's shallow feeding tunnel. The animal responsible is not eating anything green. Moles are insectivores, closer in diet to a shrew than to a rodent, and the tunnel is a byproduct of hunting, not a nest or a food cache.
What a Mole Actually Eats
Earthworms make up the bulk of a mole's diet in most soil types, supplemented by white grubs, beetle larvae, and other soil invertebrates it finds while pushing through loose earth. A mole's daily food intake is large relative to its body weight — commonly cited at roughly its own weight in worms and grubs per day — because its metabolism runs hot and it cannot fast for long. That single fact explains most mole behavior: it tunnels constantly because it has to keep finding food constantly, not because it is trying to expand a territory or build a den network for its own sake.
A mole tunnel damages a lawn mechanically, by lifting and loosening soil around grass roots, not by consuming the grass. If the visible ridge is the only symptom, the lawn is being disturbed, not eaten. Grub damage — thinning, browning patches that pull up like carpet — is a separate problem with a separate cause.
Two Tunnel Types, Two Different Meanings
Shallow ridges just under the surface are feeding tunnels, used once or briefly and often abandoned within days as the mole moves to fresh ground. Deeper tunnels, marked by scattered mounds of excavated soil rather than surface ridges, are permanent travel routes connecting a nest chamber to reliable feeding areas, and the same deep tunnel may be reused for years. Confusing the two leads to a lot of wasted effort: repeatedly stamping down or flooding a shallow feeding ridge does nothing, because that specific tunnel was likely already abandoned before anyone noticed it.
Why Grub Control Sometimes Backfires
Treating a lawn for grubs in the hope of starving out a mole population is a common recommendation that oversells its own results. Earthworms, not grubs, make up the larger share of most moles' diet in well-watered, worm-rich lawns, so removing grubs alone rarely removes the incentive to tunnel. A mole with a healthy worm population to work through will keep digging in a grub-free lawn just as readily, which is one reason mole activity and grub activity in a yard don't track each other as closely as pest-control marketing implies.
Solitary, Territorial, and Rarely Numerous
Unlike the burrow systems built by groundhogs discussed in our piece on groundhog burrowing behavior, a mole's tunnel network is almost never shared. Moles are strongly territorial and solitary outside of a brief breeding period, and a single active tunnel system in an average suburban yard usually represents one animal, occasionally two. The visual scale of the ridges — sometimes running the length of a yard — tends to overstate the actual mole population behind them, since one animal working efficiently can produce a surprising amount of visible tunnel in a single week.
Living With the Ridges
Because moles aerate soil and their presence usually signals a healthy population of earthworms and soil insects, the lawn-care case for tolerating light mole activity is stronger than most homeowners assume. Where the ridges cross a walking path or a mower's line, tamping the tunnel flat by hand or foot, without disturbing the surrounding turf, resolves the cosmetic issue without needing to remove the animal. Star-Nosed and Other Regional Species
Most of the mole activity in eastern and midwestern lawns comes from the eastern mole, but the star-nosed mole, found in wetter soils and along waterways further north and east, is a different animal entirely, identifiable by the ring of fleshy, mobile tentacles around its nose that it uses to feel out prey at astonishing speed. Star-nosed moles are also unusual among mammals for being partly aquatic, swimming through flooded tunnel sections and even foraging underwater in ponds and slow streams, a habit that has nothing to do with the dry-lawn tunneling most homeowners picture when they hear the word "mole." Out west, the broad-footed mole fills a similar ecological role in gardens and turf, with regional differences in tunnel depth and soil preference but the same basic insectivorous diet driving the behavior.
What Doesn't Actually Work
Vibrating stakes, ultrasonic repellers, and home remedies involving castor oil or chewing gum placed in tunnels are widely sold but have little consistent evidence behind them, and university turf and wildlife extension programs have tested most of these approaches without finding reliable results. Trapping, done correctly on an active deep tunnel rather than an abandoned shallow feeding ridge, remains the method with the most consistent track record where removal is genuinely necessary, though identifying which tunnel is currently active takes a bit of observation first — flattening a short section and checking whether it's pushed back up within a day or two is a simple way to confirm activity before committing to any removal effort.
