A homeowner who spots a low, fast, rope-like animal streaking along a fence line usually assumes rat, and moves on. That reflexive misidentification is probably why long-tailed weasels get so little credit for how widely they actually range through suburban and exurban yards. They are slimmer than a rat, longer, with a black-tipped tail and a body built like a length of garden hose with legs, and they hunt in short, explosive bursts rather than the scuttling gait a rodent uses.
Three Different Animals, One Family
The long-tailed weasel is the one most likely to turn up in a dry yard or woodpile, small enough to follow a vole down its own runway and fierce enough to kill prey several times its body weight. The short-tailed weasel, known as an ermine once its coat turns white for winter in northern range, prefers slightly cooler, brushier habitat and is a touch smaller. The American mink is the family's water specialist, rarely more than a hundred yards from a stream, pond edge, or drainage ditch, with slightly webbed feet and a glossier, darker coat than either weasel species.
All three share a mustelid metabolism that runs hot: a weasel's heart rate and energy demand are high enough that it typically needs to eat something close to its own body weight in food across a few days just to maintain condition, which is why they hunt constantly rather than gorging and resting like a fox or coyote might.
Reading the Signs
Weasel scat is thin, twisted, and often packed with fur and small bones, usually deposited at a den entrance or a favored feeding rock rather than scattered randomly. Tracks show five toes, though the fifth often doesn't register clearly, in a bounding pattern with paired prints rather than the alternating walk of a rat or squirrel. Minks leave a similar bounding track pattern but consistently along the immediate water's edge, often paired with partially eaten crayfish shells or fish remains left at a favored feeding rock.
Because a long-tailed weasel's body diameter is barely wider than a large vole's, it can pursue prey directly into the same burrow or runway system the prey animal was trying to escape through. This is part of why weasel presence, however rarely seen, tends to track closely with rodent abundance in a yard.
Why They're Worth Leaving Alone
A resident weasel or mink is functioning as a rodent and crayfish predator that costs nothing and needs no maintenance. The trade-off homeowners occasionally run into is poultry: an unsecured coop with any gap wider than about an inch is vulnerable, since both weasels and minks can squeeze through openings that look far too small to matter. The fix is hardware cloth rather than removal, since killing or relocating one animal just opens the territory to the next one that finds the same gap.

Distinguishing From an Escaped Ferret
Domestic ferrets, which are a different mustelid species descended from the European polecat, occasionally escape or are released and can survive for weeks in a yard before succumbing to the outdoors. A ferret is noticeably chunkier through the body than a wild weasel, often has a mixed cream-and-brown or all-white coat, and — critically — shows little to no fear of people, often approaching rather than fleeing. A truly wild weasel or mink will not tolerate a close approach and disappears into cover within seconds of being noticed, which is itself a reliable identification clue when the animal is moving too fast for a clean look at coat pattern.
Most of what happens in a resident weasel or mink's life takes place along travel corridors people already have on their property without thinking about them that way — a stream bank, a stone wall, the underside of a woodpile.
