A monarch caterpillar will not eat anything except milkweed. Not a related plant, not a similar-looking substitute — milkweed, genus Asclepias, full stop. That single dietary restriction is why a yard can be full of flowers and still contribute nothing to monarch reproduction, and why the entire idea of a backyard "waystation" comes down to one specific planting decision rather than a general pollinator-garden approach.
Why Milkweed Specifically
Milkweed produces a family of toxic compounds called cardenolides, and monarch caterpillars have evolved not just tolerance but active use of the toxin, sequestering it in their own tissue as a defense against birds and other predators. Adult monarchs will nectar on a wide range of flowers, which is why a monarch sighting doesn't guarantee a nearby milkweed patch, but egg-laying females seek out milkweed specifically, and a garden without it will never host caterpillars no matter how many other flowering plants it contains.
Common milkweed, swamp milkweed, and butterfly weed are native across most of the monarch's breeding range and support the full life cycle. Tropical milkweed, widely sold at garden centers because it flowers longer, doesn't die back in mild winters and can disrupt migration timing and increase parasite loads. Timing Beats Acreage
A few milkweed plants that emerge and stay healthy through the right window of the growing season will support more monarch caterpillars than a large patch that's past its prime by the time migrating females arrive. Milkweed itself is only part of the picture, since adult monarchs need nectar throughout the season, not just at egg-laying time. Native asters, goldenrod, and joe-pye weed extend nectar availability into late summer and fall, which matters most for the final generation of the year — the one that migrates rather than reproduces locally. Pesticides Undo the Whole Effort
