A paper wasp nest under the eaves gets treated as an emergency more often than the actual risk justifies. Paper wasps are far less defensive than yellowjackets or bald-faced hornets, tend to sting only when the nest itself is directly disturbed, and spend most of their working hours doing something genuinely useful: hunting caterpillars, aphids, and other soft-bodied insect pests to feed their larvae.
Three Different Insects, One Reputation
"Wasp" and "hornet" get used loosely enough that three fairly different insects end up lumped together in most people's minds. Paper wasps build the open, umbrella-shaped nests with visible hexagonal cells, usually tucked under eaves or in shrubs, and are the least aggressive of the three. Bald-faced hornets, despite the common name, are actually a type of yellowjacket and build the large, enclosed gray paper nests often seen hanging from tree branches — these are considerably more defensive and will pursue a perceived threat farther from the nest than a paper wasp will. True yellowjackets nest in the ground or in wall voids, are drawn to human food especially in late summer, and are responsible for most late-season picnic encounters that get blamed on "bees."
A single paper wasp colony can remove a substantial number of caterpillars and other plant-damaging larvae from a garden over a season, functioning as an active biological control that most gardeners never notice they're getting. Removing every nest on sight trades that free pest control for a marginal reduction in a risk that's already fairly low for this specific species.
When a Nest Actually Needs Attention
Location is the deciding factor more than species alone. A paper wasp nest tucked in a corner of the yard that people rarely approach can usually be left alone through the season; it will not be reused the following year, since paper wasp colonies are annual and the nest is abandoned by fall regardless of any intervention. Yellowjacket ground nests are the ones most likely to be discovered by accident, often when a lawnmower or a bare foot disturbs an entrance hole that was easy to miss in grass. Unlike the exposed, visible nests paper wasps build, a ground nest gives almost no warning before a defensive response, and the colony inside can be considerably larger than an above-ground paper wasp nest by late summer. If a nest entrance is found in an area with regular foot traffic, professional removal is the more reasonable call, simply because the warning signs that work for an aboveground nest don't apply.
Why Annual Colonies Reset Every Year
None of these insects reuse an old nest the following spring. A mated queen overwinters alone, sheltered in leaf litter, bark crevices, or a similar protected spot, and starts an entirely new colony from scratch each year — meaning last year's abandoned nest under the porch roof poses no ongoing risk and doesn't need to be removed for that reason alone. This single-queen, annual-colony structure is one reason wasp and hornet populations can vary noticeably from year to year in the same yard, tracking overwintering survival rather than any accumulation of colonies over time.
Coexisting With the Beneficial Side

Those first workers then take over foraging and nest expansion, freeing the queen to focus purely on egg-laying, which is why a paper wasp nest that looked tiny and unremarkable in May can hold dozens of cells and considerably more wasps by August — the colony's visible size tracks the compounding effect of each new worker generation contributing to further expansion, not a single sudden growth event. Nest size peaks in late summer, right before the colony begins producing the next year's queens and males, after which worker numbers decline and the whole structure is abandoned within weeks.
Distinguishing a Sting Reaction From an Emergency
A typical paper wasp or yellowjacket sting produces localized pain, redness, and swelling that resolves within a day or two, and that reaction, however uncomfortable, isn't a sign of a serious problem on its own. A genuine emergency — difficulty breathing, swelling spreading well beyond the sting site including the face or throat, dizziness, or hives appearing away from the sting — indicates a possible allergic reaction and needs immediate medical attention regardless of which specific insect was involved. Knowing a household member has a documented sting allergy is the single strongest reason to proactively remove any nest near the house, rather than relying on the generally low aggression of a specific species as sufficient protection.
