A homeowner dealing with a rat problem sets bait stations along the fence line, the rats stop showing up within a couple of weeks, and the problem looks solved. How the Poison Moves Up the Food Chain
Most modern rodenticides sold for residential use are anticoagulants, chemicals that prevent blood from clotting normally. A rat or mouse that eats a lethal dose doesn't die immediately; anticoagulant rodenticides are formulated to act over several days, partly because rodents are wary of bait that causes rapid, obviously connected symptoms and would avoid it. That delay is the mechanism of the problem: for those several days, a poisoned rodent is slower, weaker, and easier to catch, which makes it more likely, not less, to be caught by a hawk, owl, fox, or bobcat before it dies on its own.
The predator that eats it doesn't get one rodent's dose — it gets a fraction of a lethal dose from that one meal, which by itself might not be enough to kill outright. The real danger is cumulative: a raptor hunting a yard or neighborhood where bait stations are in regular use may eat several exposed rodents over weeks or months, and the anticoagulant compounds involved are formulated to persist in tissue far longer than older, first-generation versions, meaning each additional exposure adds to a body burden that doesn't clear quickly.
A raptor with rodenticide poisoning often shows no obvious external injury. It Isn't Only Raptors
Any predator or scavenger that regularly eats rodents is exposed through the same pathway. Reading Labels Before Buying
Rodenticide products vary considerably in how persistent and how potent their active ingredient is, and label language is often the only clue a shopper standing in a hardware store aisle has to go on. Second-generation anticoagulant compounds are generally the most persistent and the most implicated in secondary poisoning cases, since they were formulated specifically to remain lethal after a single feeding, which also means they linger longer in the tissue of anything that eats an exposed rodent. Older first-generation compounds typically require a rodent to feed multiple times before receiving a lethal dose, which sounds worse for rodent control but tends to result in lower tissue concentrations reaching predators. What to Do With a Suspected Poisoning
