Backyard Crayfish and Chimney Builders: Freshwater Engineers in Suburban Creeks and Lawns

A cluster of small mud towers, each one built from tightly packed pellets stacked into a chimney a few inches tall, appearing overnight in a low, soggy corner of the yard confuses most homeowners the first time they see it. There's usually no water in sight, which makes the structure look almost geological, but it's the work of a burrowing crayfish, digging down to the water table below the surface and piling the excavated mud into the distinctive chimney shape around the entrance.

Not All Crayfish Live in Streams

The image most people have of a crayfish — a stream or pond dweller found under a rock in flowing water — describes only part of the roughly several hundred crayfish species found across North America. Burrowing and semi-burrowing species instead dig vertical tunnels down to groundwater in wet meadows, roadside ditches, and low-lying yards, sometimes with no permanent surface water anywhere nearby. These burrows can run several feet deep, reaching down to a stable water table that keeps the lower chamber flooded year-round even when the surface above dries out completely in summer.

Stream-dwelling crayfish, by contrast, live under rocks and debris in creeks and are the species most people actually picture — the ones flipped up while wading a shallow stream, quick to dart backward with a snap of the tail when disturbed.

A Backward Escape

A crayfish's rapid backward dart when startled comes from a powerful flex of the abdomen and tail fan, propelling the animal away from a threat in a fraction of a second. It's one of the fastest reflex escape responses among freshwater invertebrates and is the main reason crayfish are so difficult to catch by hand once alerted to a hand or foot nearby.

Ecosystem Engineers, Literally

Crayfish burrows do real structural work in wet soil systems, similar in concept to what earthworm burrows do at a smaller scale: they create channels for water movement, aerate saturated soil, and, once abandoned, are frequently reused by other small animals as shelter. In streams, crayfish are both a major prey item — supporting fish, herons, raccoons, otters, and mink — and a significant consumer themselves, eating algae, decaying plant matter, small invertebrates, and occasionally fish eggs, which makes them a genuine keystone link connecting the bottom and middle of the aquatic food web at once.

Chimneys in the Lawn: What to Actually Do

  • Leave burrows alone where drainage allows — they typically indicate a naturally wet spot that would be soggy regardless of the crayfish
  • Don't fill or flood burrows to evict the animal — the burrow will simply be rebuilt, and the underlying wet-soil condition remains unchanged either way
  • Consider the wet spot for a rain garden instead of fighting it — converting a chronically soggy patch into a planted rain garden works with the drainage pattern rather than against it
  • Avoid pesticide runoff near creek-adjacent yards — crayfish are notably sensitive to water pollution and are used by some monitoring programs as an indicator species for stream health

Growth Through Molting, Not Gradual Change

Like other crustaceans, a crayfish doesn't grow the way a mammal or bird does, gradually and continuously. It grows in a series of steps, each one requiring the animal to molt — shedding its entire hard exoskeleton at once and expanding into a soft, vulnerable new shell underneath before that shell hardens over the following days. A freshly molted crayfish is essentially defenseless, unable to snap its claws with any force and far more likely to be eaten, so molting tends to happen inside the burrow or under cover rather than out in the open. Old shed shells found near a burrow entrance or under a streamside rock, pale and papery compared to a living crayfish, are a molt rather than a dead animal, and finding several near one burrow across a season is a decent sign the resident has been feeding well enough to keep growing.

An Overlooked Piece of the Local Watershed

Crayfish rarely get mentioned alongside the more visible wildlife people think of as backyard neighbors, but any property near a creek, ditch, or seasonally wet low spot is very likely hosting one or more species without anyone noticing beyond the occasional mud chimney. They belong to the same category of overlooked infrastructure species as the dragonfly larvae living in a garden pond — quietly doing structural and food-web work that becomes visible only when someone knows what the small, easy-to-miss signs actually mean.
