Anyone who's put in a garden pond and waited to see what shows up usually gets dragonflies before almost anything else, often within days. What's easy to miss is that the darting, patrolling adult most people notice is the shortest phase of an insect that may have already spent one to three years living underwater as a completely different-looking predator before it ever grew wings.
Wing Position Is the Fastest Tell
Dragonflies and damselflies both belong to the order Odonata and share the same basic body plan — large compound eyes, two pairs of wings, an elongated abdomen — which is why they get lumped together casually. The single most reliable way to separate them at rest is wing position: dragonflies hold their wings out flat and perpendicular to the body like a parked airplane, while damselflies fold their wings back along the length of the abdomen, close together, giving a much slimmer resting silhouette. Body build backs this up at a glance — dragonflies are generally heavier-bodied and faster, stronger fliers, while damselflies are noticeably thinner, almost thread-like, and fly with a weaker, more fluttery wingbeat. Eye spacing is the third clue: a dragonfly's eyes typically meet or nearly meet at the top of the head, while a damselfly's eyes sit clearly separated on either side, giving it a distinct dumbbell-shaped head.
Years Underwater as a Different Animal Entirely
Before any of that flying happens, both groups spend the great majority of their lives as aquatic nymphs (sometimes called naiads), living entirely underwater and breathing through internal gills rather than the spiracles adult insects use. Depending on species and water temperature, this stage can last anywhere from a few months to several years, and the nymph looks nothing like the adult it will become — a stout, often mottled, wingless predator that stalks or ambushes other aquatic life, including mosquito larvae, small fish fry, tadpoles, and other insect nymphs. Dragonfly nymphs have a unique hinged lower jaw called a labium that shoots forward to grab prey, functioning almost like a second set of jaws folded away until needed, giving them a genuinely startling strike speed for something living quietly on a pond bottom.
Both nymphs and adults eat mosquitoes in real quantity — nymphs take larvae underwater, adults snatch flying adults out of the air mid-flight — which is a genuine reason a pond with an established dragonfly population tends to have fewer mosquitoes nearby. The caveat is that a pond needs to be stable and mostly free of mosquito-eating fish or heavy chemical treatment for the nymph stage to establish in the first place, since nymphs take a year or more to mature and won't survive a pond that's drained, heavily dosed, or restocked with predatory fish each season.
Emergence and the Wheel Position
When a nymph is finally ready to transform, it climbs out of the water onto emergent vegetation or a rock, and the adult splits out of the nymphal skin in a process that takes an hour or more as wings unfurl and harden — a vulnerable window when newly emerged adults, still pale and soft, are easy prey for birds. Adults are territorial, especially males over open water, patrolling and chasing off rivals from a favored perch or stretch of shoreline. Mating itself produces one of the more visually odd sights at a garden pond: pairs form a circular "wheel" position, the male gripping the female behind her head while she curls her abdomen forward to his secondary reproductive organs, and many species remain paired, sometimes still connected, while the female lays eggs directly into water or plant stems at the pond's edge.
