A hummingbird's metabolism is unlike almost anything else in the backyard: a resting heart rate in the hundreds of beats per minute, wingbeats too fast to see without slow-motion video, and a daily energy requirement so high relative to body size that the bird is never more than a few hours from starvation. That single fact should shape every decision about feeding them, because a feeder that's convenient for the homeowner but poorly maintained can do real harm to a bird running that close to the edge.
The Sugar Ratio Matters More Than the Color
A four-to-one ratio of water to plain white sugar approximates natural flower nectar and is the standard recommended by ornithology organizations including the Cornell Lab. Red dye is unnecessary and, more importantly, unregulated in commercial nectar mixes — a red feeder port does the job of attracting attention just as well without introducing dye into what the bird actually drinks. Honey should never substitute for sugar, since it ferments faster and can promote a fungal infection that's fatal to hummingbirds specifically.
Sugar water ferments and grows mold quickly in warm weather, often within two to three days. A feeder that looks clean can still be dangerous if the nectar has turned cloudy or the ports show black mold. In hot climates, cleaning and refilling every two to three days isn't optional maintenance — it's the single biggest factor in whether a feeder helps or harms the birds using it.
Plants Do More Work Than Feeders

Spacing two or three feeders out of sight of each other around the yard, rather than clustering them together, reduces the ability of one bird to defend all of them at once and generally results in more total birds feeding, even though it looks like it should be less efficient.
Migration Timing and When to Take Feeders Down
A persistent myth holds that leaving feeders up too late in fall traps hummingbirds that should be migrating. Migration timing in hummingbirds is triggered primarily by day length and internal hormonal cues, not by food availability, so a feeder left up does not delay a healthy bird's departure. Predators and Feeder Placement

A hummingbird's high-energy lifestyle would be impossible to sustain overnight without a specific physiological adaptation called torpor, a controlled, dramatic drop in metabolic rate and body temperature that lets the bird survive up to twelve hours without feeding. During torpor, heart rate and body temperature can fall to a small fraction of active daytime levels, essentially putting the bird into a short-term, reversible hibernation-like state each night. This is part of why hummingbirds appear so frantic during the day — they're not just active, they're actively rebuilding energy reserves they'll deliberately shut down again come nightfall, and a bird that fails to find enough food during the day risks not having enough reserve to survive the metabolic cost of coming out of torpor the next morning.
Why Late-Season Sightings Aren't Always Migrants
An unfamiliar hummingbird species showing up at a feeder well outside its expected range and season, particularly in late fall in areas that normally see none, is increasingly common and worth reporting to a regional birding group or Cornell's eBird platform rather than assumed to be a stray in trouble.
